Pakistan Shines At International Physics Olympiad With Three Bronze Medals

Pakistan has claimed three bronze medals at the 56th International Physics Olympiad held in Bucaramanga, Colombia. The achievement represents another milestone for the country’s emerging science talent pipeline. Therefore, Pakistan International Physics Olympiad success demonstrates the effectiveness of the nation’s STEM Careers Program in identifying and developing young scientists.

Three students carried Pakistan’s medal tally. Zulfiqar Ali from Government City Boys School in Dera Ghazi Khan secured bronze. Additionally, Ali Hamdan Alvi of FG Sir Syed College in Rawalpindi earned the same honor. Meanwhile, Daniyal Shahzad Hamid from The Science School in Rawat, Islamabad, completed the medal-winning trio.

Two additional students earned Honorable Mentions for strong performances. Hazza Mahmood of Aitchison College in Lahore made the list. Furthermore, Abdullah Ejaz from Siddeeq Public School in Rawalpindi also received recognition.

The competition drew more than 400 exceptional students from over 90 countries to Colombia. However, Pakistan’s delegation proved competitive against this elite field. The event provided a prestigious platform for young physicists worldwide to test their knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Pakistan’s selection process runs deep and rigorous. All competing students emerged from the 22nd National Science Talent Contest conducted under the STEM Careers Program. This program represents a joint initiative between the Higher Education Commission and the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The selection journey demands commitment and skill. Students face a rigorous nationwide screening process first. Then those who advance move into intensive residential training camps at PIEAS. Furthermore, they receive advanced theoretical and experimental instruction from national and international experts. Consequently, this comprehensive preparation enabled Pakistan’s team to compete at the highest international level.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Irfan and Dr. Muhammad Waseem of PIEAS led the Pakistani delegation. Their leadership proved crucial in guiding the young scientists through the competition.

PIEAS operates under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission umbrella. The institute conducts the National Science Talent Contest annually across four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. The contest reaches 19 cities throughout Pakistan, casting a wide net for talent identification.

Top performers from the NSTC receive invitations to residential training camps. Additionally, they benefit from advanced scientific instruction before national team selection. Therefore, this pipeline ensures Pakistan sends fully prepared competitors to International Science Olympiads.

Multiple institutions serve as home bases for the STEM program. PIEAS handles Physics. The NIBGE-C at PIEAS manages Biology. The HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry at the University of Karachi oversees Chemistry. Meanwhile, COMSATS University Islamabad’s Lahore Campus coordinates Mathematics.

Pakistan has maintained International Physics Olympiad participation since 2001. Furthermore, the country joined the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2005. Still, Biology and Chemistry Olympiads only came into the fold starting 2006. Since the STEM Careers Program’s inception, more than 365 Pakistani students have represented the nation at International Science Olympiads.

Medal accumulation has been steady and impressive. The program has generated 144 medals across all competitions. Additionally, more than 5,000 students have benefited from over 256 advanced training camps conducted under the program.

This Pakistan International Physics Olympiad achievement reflects institutional commitment to science education. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission remains focused on nurturing young talent. Finally, the nation continues building the scientific foundation necessary for long-term socio-economic development through excellence in science and technology.
