Pakistan Names Sahibzada Farhan T20I Captain Ahead of Sri Lanka Series

Pakistan T20I captain

Pakistan have reportedly decided to appoint opening batter Sahibzada Farhan as their new Pakistan T20I captain. He would replace Salman Ali Agha for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka. Farhan will lead a relatively young side that also features several experienced players.

Reports suggest former captain Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Naseem Shah and Fakhar Zaman will return to the squad. However, Ahmed Daniyal, Saad Masood, Haider Ali and Mohammad Wasim Jnr are unlikely to keep their places. Shaheen Shah Afridi also appears set to miss out.

Farhan recently captained Pakistan’s young squad at the Asian Games 2026. The team reached the final for the first time and won the silver medal. However, India beat them by 19 runs in the final after setting a target of 212.

Pakistan finished on 192-6 despite a blistering 96 from Hasan Nawaz. The 24-year-old struck seven sixes and five fours, which equals the record for most sixes by a Pakistani batter in a T20I innings.

Meanwhile, all three T20Is will take place at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from October 9 to 13. The tour marks Sri Lanka’s first bilateral short-format visit to Pakistan since 2019. Pakistan swept that three-match series 3-0 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Moreover, the two sides have met 31 times in T20Is, with Pakistan winning 18 and Sri Lanka 13.

After the T20Is, England will join Pakistan and Sri Lanka for an ODI tri-series in Rawalpindi and Lahore. The tri-series begins on October 18, when Pakistan face Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi. Pakistan then meet England there on October 20, before Sri Lanka face England on October 22.

Furthermore, the action moves to Lahore, where Pakistan play England on October 25 and Sri Lanka on October 27. Sri Lanka and England meet on October 29, and the top two teams qualify for the final on October 31 at Gaddafi Stadium.

Sri Lanka will then play a three-day warm-up match in Islamabad from November 4 to 6. Finally, they begin a two-Test series against Pakistan as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.

The first Test runs from November 9 to 13 in Rawalpindi. The second takes place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore from November 17 to 21. Therefore, the incoming Pakistan T20I captain faces a busy home season.
