Over 500 Men Report Workplace Harassment in Pakistan Annually

Men in Pakistan are increasingly approaching official authorities with complaints about their work environments. Men workplace harassment reports have surged significantly, with 521 men filing complaints in a single year. These individuals approached the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment seeking relief and intervention. According to official documents, this represents a substantial shift in workplace complaint patterns.

A total of 1,290 men and women lodged harassment complaints with the federal ombudsperson during the year. Officials disposed of 1,104 cases out of these complaints. Of the total complaints, 769 were filed by women and 521 by men. Therefore, men accounted for roughly 40 percent of all reported cases. This significant proportion challenges traditional assumptions about workplace harassment primarily affecting women.

The highest number of complaints from both men and women came from the ombudsperson’s head office in Islamabad. Additionally, Punjab ranked second among all regions in complaint volume. Among male complainants, Islamabad recorded the highest number of men workplace harassment cases. Furthermore, Punjab ranked second for male complaints. In other regions, 42 men in Peshawar approached the ombudsperson. Additionally, 24 men in Karachi filed cases. Finally, two men in Balochistan reported workplace harassment through official channels.

For women complainants, 496 complaints arrived from Islamabad during the period. Meanwhile, 154 cases came from Punjab. So women remain heavily concentrated in Islamabad’s reporting. However, the geographic distribution differs somewhat between male and female complainants.

The figures suggest that while women still make up the larger share of complainants, a significant number of men are now formally reporting workplace harassment. Therefore, men workplace harassment represents an emerging pattern requiring attention from policymakers and employers. This trend indicates that harassment affects both genders in Pakistan’s workplaces.

Multiple factors may explain this increase in male reporting. Greater awareness of harassment definitions encourages more men to come forward. Additionally, reduced stigma around reporting workplace grievances helps men file official complaints. Furthermore, improved accessibility of ombudsperson services reaches more complainants. So institutional factors support increased male reporting rates.

Workplace harassment encompasses diverse behaviors including discrimination, verbal abuse, and intimidation. Men may experience harassment based on ethnicity, religion, or professional status. Additionally, some men face harassment from supervisors or colleagues for various reasons. Therefore, the harassment spectrum affects both genders differently.

The ombudsperson institution plays a crucial role in protecting workers. Officials investigate complaints impartially and recommend corrective measures. Additionally, the ombudsperson can initiate cases against organizations violating harassment policies. Therefore, the office serves as an important safeguard for employees.
