Nokia secured a major legal victory in the UK after winning an appeal against Acer and Asus. The UK court permanently stopped lawsuits linked to video-streaming patent disputes. As a result, Nokia strengthened its position in a growing global battle over technology licensing rights.
The dispute centered on video coding technology and licensing terms tied to Nokia’s patents. Earlier, Acer and Asus had won a High Court declaration that supported temporary licensing arrangements. They argued that Nokia should provide an interim license until the court decided fair licensing conditions under FRAND rules, which stand for fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms.
However, Nokia challenged that decision through an appeal. On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal permanently stayed the London lawsuits, effectively ending the legal action against the Finnish company. Furthermore, a Nokia spokesperson confirmed that a major trial planned for June and July will no longer move forward.
The court ruled that Nokia had already offered licensing terms through arbitration. According to judges, the company proposed allowing Acer and Asus to use its patents under FRAND conditions that would later be determined by arbitration proceedings. Therefore, the court decided the London cases should not continue in parallel.
The legal battle is part of a wider global conflict over patent licensing in the telecom industry. Companies often fight over FRAND terms because these agreements control access to critical technologies used in smartphones, streaming, and wireless communication. In addition, courts in both the UK and China can now set global FRAND terms after important legal rulings in recent years.
Before Acer and Asus filed lawsuits in London in 2025, Nokia had already launched related legal actions in the United States, Brazil, Germany, and India. Meanwhile, Hisense also sued Nokia but settled before the appeal hearing began. In the end, the Nokia ruling could influence future global patent disputes involving major technology companies.
