New Optical Fiber Cable Will Increase Internet Speeds by 400%

new optical fiber technology

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) recently announced a major breakthrough in telecommunications. The Japanese company has developed a four-core multicore optical fiber (MCF) that significantly boosts data capacity. This innovation promises to deliver four times the speed of conventional fiber cables. Surprisingly, the new design maintains the exact same thickness and diameter as current cables. This ensures that the new optical fiber technology remains fully compatible with existing global infrastructure.

Engineers focused on keeping the cable’s cross-section unchanged for a specific reason. Most cable-laying vessels and terrestrial racks cannot easily handle larger cables. By maintaining the standard size, NTT allows for a seamless integration process. Unlike traditional single-core fibers, this new MCF contains four separate cores within the glass cladding. Using spatial multiplexing, signals travel through each core independently. This setup allows a single fiber to carry four separate optical paths simultaneously.

In undersea environments, cables typically bundle up to 48 individual fibers together. The new optical fiber technology increases this capacity to 192 cores per cable. To support a smooth rollout, NTT also developed specialized technical components. These include a submarine joint box to connect land-based cables to the new undersea systems. Additionally, a factory joint box allows technicians to connect two MCF cables directly on the seabed. These tools link the multicore fiber to transmission equipment designed for older systems.

NTT expects this multicore fiber technology to be ready for commercial deployment by 2029. This innovation helps telecom companies expand network capacity while reducing long-term costs. It eliminates the need for a complete overhaul of current hardware. By upgrading the internal core rather than the external cable size, companies can save time during installation. As data demands grow globally, this high-capacity fiber will play a vital role in future connectivity. Most experts believe this will provide the backbone for the next generation of high-speed internet services.
