Major Earthquake Hits Molucca Sea Triggering Urgent Tsunami Warnings

The massive earthquake hit the Molucca Sea region early Thursday morning at a local time of 6:48 AM. The United States Geological Survey confirmed the quake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of ten kilometers, increasing the potential for surface damage.

The epicenter was located approximately 120 kilometers from Ternate, a significant city in Indonesia’s North Maluku province. With a population exceeding 205,000 residents, local officials are currently assessing the impact on infrastructure and coastal safety within the city.

Following the tremors, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a formal alert for coasts within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter. Hazardous waves are considered possible along the shorelines of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia throughout the coming hours.

Current forecasts suggest that some Indonesian coasts could see waves reaching between 0.3 to 1.0 meters above the normal tide level. Smaller waves are also predicted for the coastal areas of Guam, Japan, Taiwan, and other nearby island nations.

Emergency management agencies across Southeast Asia have been placed on high alert to coordinate potential evacuations from low-lying areas. Residents in the affected zones are being urged to move inland and seek higher ground until the warnings are officially lifted.

Seismologists continue to monitor the region for aftershocks that could further complicate rescue and relief efforts on the ground. This significant seismic event highlights the ongoing vulnerability of the Ring of Fire to sudden and powerful tectonic movements.
