Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has strongly criticised JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman over his recent remarks regarding the sacrifices of Pakistan’s security forces, calling them deeply hurtful to martyrs and their families. He said no soldier sacrifices life merely for a salary, stressing that service is driven by faith, patriotism, ideology and a strong sense of national duty.
In his statement, Asif described Maulana Fazlur Rehman as an experienced politician and respected religious leader who should exercise greater care while making public comments. He argued that connecting the sacrifices of soldiers with financial compensation unfairly ignores their commitment and has deeply affected the emotions of families who lost loved ones while serving the country.
Furthermore, the defence minister said Pakistan continues to face the challenge of terrorism, where members of the armed forces, other security institutions and civilians still embrace martyrdom in the line of duty. He maintained that political leaders have every right to disagree on policies or decisions, but they should not question the patriotism, dedication and sacrifices made by those protecting the nation.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah also paid tribute to the country’s martyrs, describing martyrdom as the highest honour for a true believer and a value beyond worldly understanding. He prayed that Allah grants patience and strength to the families of martyrs and veterans, adding that unwavering faith remains essential for Pakistan’s freedom, stability and future.
At the same time, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the Pakistan Army represents the country’s dignity, security and survival rather than being only a state institution. He stated that peace and freedom exist because of the sacrifices made by soldiers serving on mountains, deserts and in counterterrorism operations across the country.
Tariq Fazal added that history written through the sacrifices of martyrs cannot be erased by political statements or criticism, regardless of differing opinions. He emphasised that respecting the country’s defenders is a shared national responsibility and said Pakistan’s soldiers have always answered every call of duty with the spirit of “Pakistan First.”
