Karachi new flyovers at Power House and 4-K Chowrangi aim to end years of crippling congestion
Karachi is finally getting serious about its traffic crisis. Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed the Karachi Development Authority and the Local Government Department to speed up work on two major flyover projects. The locations are Power House Chowrangi and 4-K Chowrangi. Together, the Karachi new flyovers carry a combined price tag of Rs. 4.87 billion. Furthermore, both projects form part of a broader push to reduce congestion across the city.
The Chief Minister chaired a high-level meeting at CM House to review ongoing infrastructure schemes. Both flyover projects, therefore, came under direct scrutiny during that session.
The Power House Chowrangi flyover will cost Rs. 2.5 billion. It also features a 636-metre dual-track elevated structure. Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah explained the design clearly. The flyover will separate through traffic heading toward 4-K Chowrangi from turning traffic moving toward Saba Cinema and Khwaja Ajmer Nagri. Around 80 percent of through traffic will use the elevated road. Local traffic will, therefore, continue at ground level through service roads instead.
The second flyover at 4-K Chowrangi carries a cost of Rs. 2.377 billion. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab told the meeting that roughly 70 percent of traffic at that intersection moves toward Surjani Town daily. That volume creates severe bottlenecks and long delays. However, this flyover will allow uninterrupted flow and dramatically cut travel times for commuters heading in that direction.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also directed relevant departments to finalize planning carefully. Moreover, he stressed that both structures must meet future traffic demands, not just current ones. He wants design work to reflect long-term urban growth rather than short-term fixes. Still, the most important thing is that work actually accelerates. Finally, Karachi has waited long enough — and these two flyovers may deliver the relief millions of daily commuters so desperately need.
