Paleontologists in southern France recently shared news of a remarkable prehistoric find. They uncovered a massive nesting ground containing hundreds of ancient dinosaur eggs dating back nearly 72 million years. The discovery occurred at the Mèze fossil site during winter excavations. Scientists found the eggs preserved within Upper Cretaceous rock layers. Remarkably, many of these fossils remain entirely intact after tens of millions of years.

The site director, Alain Cabot, describes the area as an exceptional concentration of fossils. It spans roughly 15 square miles of land. Within just a few weeks, the team unearthed over 100 eggs. Researchers believe many more specimens remain buried deep beneath the surrounding sediment. This extensive fossil layer proves that the region served as a massive prehistoric nursery. Dinosaurs likely returned to this specific location repeatedly to lay their eggs.

Most of the findings belong to titanosaurs. These were massive, long-necked herbivores that dominated the Late Cretaceous period. However, the site also contains eggs from smaller, distinct species. Scientists identified remains from armored ankylosaurs and rare carnivorous theropods. This variety suggests that different types of dinosaurs shared the same breeding environment. It resembles how modern bird colonies gather in protected areas today.

Geologists claim that periodic flooding helped preserve these ancient dinosaur eggs so perfectly. Rapidly rising water buried the nests under thick sediment. This process shielded the shells from erosion and decay. These floodplain conditions essentially created natural time capsules from a lost world. Today, the museum allows the public to watch excavations in real-time. This discovery offers a rare look at dinosaur reproduction during the final chapter of their history.
