Pakistan freelancers billion dollar target within reach as SBP confirms $959 million in export earnings in just 10 months
Pakistan’s freelancing community is on the verge of making history. State Bank of Pakistan data shows that computer and information services exports reached $959 million during July to April of the current fiscal year. That compares to $642 million in the same period last year — a 49 percent jump in just one year. Moreover, the Pakistan freelancers billion dollar target now looks firmly within reach before the fiscal year closes.
Dr. Imran Batada, President and CEO of the Pakistan Freelancers Association, credited the surge to greater participation on global platforms. More Pakistanis are now active on Upwork, Fiverr, and other digital marketplaces than ever before. Furthermore, awareness of freelancing has grown significantly across the country. Online learning, private institutes, government training programs, and NGO-led initiatives have all contributed to that shift.
Pakistan’s freelance workforce now stands at around 3 million people. That number gives the sector real economic weight. Dr. Batada stressed the need for structured growth through collaboration between government bodies, financial institutions, and industry stakeholders. He also noted that he personally helped train and develop more than 25,000 freelancers throughout his career. Therefore, the growth reflects deliberate investment in human capital, not just fortunate circumstances.
Skill development remains central to sustaining this momentum. Dr. Batada highlighted the importance of continuous upgrading, particularly in artificial intelligence and soft skills, to stay competitive in global markets. Furthermore, PAFLA is developing nationwide online and on-ground training programmes focused on freelancing skills, business development, and digital payment systems.
The milestone also reflects coordinated institutional support. The Ministry of IT and Telecom, PSEB, State Bank of Pakistan, and the Special Investment Facilitation Council all play active roles in pushing freelance export growth forward. Finally, when Pakistan crosses the $1 billion mark, it will not just be a number — it will be proof that a digital economy built on individual talent can deliver at national scale.
