Maryam Nawaz Plans to Put Electric Buses in Every Corner of Punjab

Punjab electric buses to cover all 148 tehsils as the provincial government pushes its biggest public transport expansion yet

Punjab is going electric — and it is going everywhere. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced that Punjab electric buses will be introduced across all 148 tehsils in the province. The move marks the most ambitious expansion of Punjab’s public transport network to date. Moreover, it signals a clear shift toward cleaner, modernised urban mobility across the province.

This latest announcement builds on recent momentum. Last month, Maryam Nawaz approved electric buses for 10 additional districts including Attock, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, and Okara, among others. That approval came during a meeting reviewing mass transit progress in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. Therefore, the all-tehsils announcement is a natural and significant next step.

During that same meeting, the chief minister directed authorities to speed up construction and rehabilitation work on metro bus stations. She also approved new station designs. Furthermore, officials were told to accelerate delivery timelines across ongoing transit projects. The message, therefore, was clear — Punjab’s transport transformation is not waiting.

The broader programme reflects two priorities at once. First, it aims to improve public transport access for millions of Punjabis living outside major cities. Second, it targets a reduction in environmental pollution across the province. Electric buses produce zero direct emissions. They also lower long-term operating costs compared to conventional diesel fleets. Both factors, therefore, make the case for this expansion a strong one.

Still, delivering electric buses to all 148 tehsils is no small logistical challenge. Infrastructure, charging networks, and operational capacity will all need to scale quickly. However, with the chief minister personally driving the agenda, Punjab’s electric transport push looks serious. Finally, for commuters across the province, change may be closer than it has ever been.
