Malir Expressway opening set for end of May as Sindh government pushes to complete Karachi’s biggest road project
Karachi is days away from a major traffic breakthrough. Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that the Malir Expressway, also known as Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway, will open fully for public traffic by end of May. The Malir Expressway opening will connect the corridor directly to the M-9 Motorway. Moreover, it will cut commute times by up to a full hour for thousands of daily travellers.
The project is enormous. The expressway stretches 39 kilometres and carries a price tag of Rs. 54.7 billion. Authorities have already opened it in phases. However, the remaining sections are expected to go live later this month. The project had crossed 88 percent completion earlier this year. Therefore, the finish line is finally here.
Memon spoke at a press conference in Karachi. He called the expressway a landmark development for the city’s transport infrastructure. Furthermore, he said the M-9 link would dramatically improve traffic flow for commuters entering and leaving Karachi. For daily travellers, that means less gridlock and more time saved.
The minister also announced a second road project currently under development. A new corridor will connect Karachi Port with Taj Haider Bridge. He said the groundbreaking ceremony is expected around the same time as the expressway completion. Therefore, Karachi’s infrastructure momentum is not slowing down.
Work on bridges, underpasses, and roads continues across the city under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and local government departments. Still, the expressway remains the centrepiece of this entire infrastructure push. Finally, after years of phased construction, Karachi is about to experience what a fully operational high-speed urban corridor actually delivers.
