Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has introduced a new petrol subsidy to shield ordinary citizens from the burden of rising fuel prices. The relief targets motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws and small cars with engines up to 800cc. Officials say the initiative responds directly to growing pressure on household budgets.
Under the scheme, eligible motorcycle, rickshaw and Qingqi users will get Rs. 100 relief per litre on up to 20 litres of petrol each month. This translates into maximum monthly support of Rs. 2,000 for these commuters. Meanwhile, owners of cars up to 800cc will receive the same per-litre discount on up to 30 litres monthly, capping their benefit at Rs. 3,000.
The government attributes the timing of this relief to a sharp rise in global oil prices. Officials link this increase to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which have unsettled international energy markets. Therefore, authorities decided to intervene before the price hikes could further squeeze low-income households.
Registration for the petrol subsidy began today, though the government has not yet released full details. Instead, an awareness campaign will guide applicants through the enrollment process in the coming days. Additionally, officials have indicated that eligibility checks will be straightforward for registered vehicle owners.
The rollout will happen in phases. Islamabad will be the first city to implement the scheme, starting from the night between Monday and Tuesday. Finally, the initiative will expand nationwide, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, from the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
This targeted approach reflects the government’s focus on vehicles most commonly used for daily commuting and local transport. Small cars, motorcycles and three-wheelers form the backbone of urban and rural mobility across Pakistan. Still, questions remain about how quickly the registration process will reach citizens outside major cities. Officials advise citizens to monitor further announcements about eligibility and enrollment steps.
