Pakistan Sees Rising Tax Filing Numbers This Year

Pakistan tax returns filed

Pakistan’s tax filing numbers show encouraging growth this season. The Federal Board of Revenue confirmed Pakistan tax returns filed reached nearly 2 million by September 5. This represents approximately 400,000 more returns compared to last year. During the same period previously, only 1.6 million returns had been received.

However, tax collection figures tell a different story entirely. Tax deposited alongside these filings totaled Rs. 3.5 billion specifically. This amount remains almost unchanged from last year’s comparable period. Therefore, more filers haven’t necessarily translated into proportionally higher revenue collection.

For broader context, FBR recorded nearly 6 million total returns for tax year 2025. This provides useful comparison for understanding current filing trajectory. The statutory deadline for tax year 2026 filing remains September 30 specifically.

FBR recently introduced additional complexity into this filing season. The authority amended the income tax return form for tax year 2026 specifically. Through SRO 1495(I)/2026, issued Thursday, FBR modified the Income Tax Rules, 2002. Additionally, new provisions were introduced within the Second Schedule specifically.

This timing drew immediate criticism from tax professionals. One tax expert questioned the wisdom of these changes directly. They argued introducing a new SRO at this stage creates unnecessary confusion. Additionally, they characterized the timing as unjustified specifically. This concern stems from the limited weeks remaining before the September 30 deadline.

Therefore, taxpayers and preparers must now navigate updated requirements quickly. This creates additional pressure during an already time-sensitive filing period. Finally, while Pakistan tax returns filed numbers show positive growth, the late-stage regulatory changes add unwelcome complexity for filers racing toward the deadline.
