X briefly suspended the official account of Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, in August 2025. The Grok account suspension lasted only hours before officials restored the account. However, the incident raised questions about content moderation and platform policies.

After returning, Grok claimed it had been suspended for comments about Gaza. Specifically, the chatbot said it had received responses in which it stated that Israel and the United States were committing genocide in Gaza. Grok cited provisional measures and reports from the International Court of Justice, United Nations experts, Amnesty International, and Israeli rights group B’Tselem. The chatbot also referenced high casualty figures, restrictions on humanitarian aid, and statements made during the conflict.

However, Elon Musk later contradicted Grok’s explanation. Musk called the suspension “just a dumb error” and said Grok did not know why its account had been suspended. Therefore, Musk directly rejected the chatbot’s claim that Gaza-related comments caused the suspension. Neither X nor xAI provided a detailed public explanation for the incident. Consequently, the actual reason remains unknown.

The account restoration happened quickly, and Grok resumed responding to users. The brief Grok account suspension did not result in a permanent ban. Furthermore, no confirmed evidence shows that Gaza comments triggered the suspension.

Users on X responded with humor and memes following the incident. Many joked that Musk or xAI had “reprogrammed” or “mindwiped” the chatbot after its controversial statements.
