May 2026 could prove to be a holiday-heavy month for Pakistanis. Public holidays, weekends, Youm-e-Takbir, and expected Eid ul Adha breaks will likely push the total days off to 14 or 15. Consequently, holidays in May may reach record levels. If the government announces an additional holiday, the count could go even higher. Employees across both public and private sectors will welcome the extended breaks.
The month will begin with an immediate three-day break. Labor Day falls on Friday, 1 May. When added to the weekend on 2 and 3 May, three consecutive holidays arrive right at the start. Therefore, holidays in May start strong from day one. More days off are expected later in the month due to Eid ul Adha. However, final dates depend on the sighting of the Zilhaj moon.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on 17 May. Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad confirmed the schedule. If the moon is sighted on 17 May, Eid ul Adha will fall between 27 and 29 May. In that case, combined with the weekend, people could get a five-day break. If the moon is not sighted on 17 May, Ziqad will complete 30 days. Then Eid would likely fall from 28 to 30 May. In that scenario, Sunday, 31 May, adds another holiday. Consequently, holidays in May could stretch even further.
There is also a chance for an even longer stretch. If the government announces an additional day off on Monday, 25 May, it would link with the preceding weekend of 23 and 24 May. This would create an extended break. For now, Pakistanis can mark their calendars. May promises plenty of time off.
