Government Abolishes Free Electricity Units for Power Sector Employees

government abolishes free electricity units

Government abolishes free electricity units for power sector employees on Friday. Power Minister Awais Leghari announced the decision on X. The Lahore High Court accepted the government’s petition. This clears the path for terminating the long-standing benefit. Leghari called it a historic reform in Pakistan’s energy sector. He said this happens for the first time in the country’s history. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led this change.

The free electricity facility always sparked public anger. Ordinary consumers face rising electricity bills every month. Power sector employees enjoyed free units as a job perk. The public demanded an end to this privilege for years. Leghari said the government received the honor of fulfilling this demand. He termed the decision a major step toward fairness and structural reform.

Government abolishes free electricity units after a court-backed process. The Lahore High Court previously ruled that the facility could not be withdrawn unilaterally. Such benefits form part of employment conditions. The Power Division filed a petition to challenge that stance. The court accepted the petition today. Leghari thanked Allah Almighty for bestowing this honor upon the government.

Future energy reforms will focus on transparency and financial discipline. Consumer relief remains a top priority. The minister added that the government commits to every necessary measure for collective improvement. Ordinary Pakistanis now see a level playing field. Power sector employees will pay for electricity like everyone else. A small step for fairness. A big step for the nation.
