Pakistan Takes Center Stage as US and Iran Pause Hostilities

US Iran Ceasefire

In a stunning diplomatic reversal, President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran late Tuesday. This temporary suspension of military strikes follows intense mediation by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. Trump described the agreement as a “double-sided” ceasefire. It hinges on the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan’s role as the primary backchannel positions Islamabad at the heart of a potential permanent settlement.

The White House confirmed receiving a 10-point proposal from Tehran. This document provides a “workable basis” for long-term peace. High-level talks will begin in Islamabad this Friday, April 11. Despite the news, the situation remains incredibly fragile. The Israeli military reported missiles launched from Iran just minutes after Trump’s announcement.

Reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains the most critical goal for global energy markets. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi signaled that safe passage would continue for the next two weeks. The 10-point plan likely covers sanctions relief and regional security guarantees. However, Tehran warned that their “hands remain upon the trigger.” They cautioned that the ceasefire does not yet signal an official end to the war.

This success follows several high-stakes meetings between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt, and Pakistan. These regional powers have pushed for local solutions while bypassing traditional Western frameworks. The world now turns its eyes to the upcoming summit in Pakistan. Diplomats hope to transform this brief pause into a lasting accord. If successful, the Islamabad talks could represent the most significant de-escalation in the Middle East in decades.
