Chinese Shipping Giant COSCO Resumes Bookings For Key Gulf Countries

Chinese shipping conglomerate COSCO Shipping Lines has officially restarted its booking services for general cargo shipments to several key Gulf countries. The decision follows a twenty-one-day suspension that was initially implemented due to escalating tensions and maritime restrictions in the region.

The company confirmed that new reservations for standard containers are now being accepted for destinations including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq. These services, primarily originating from the Far East, have been restored with immediate effect.

Despite the resumption, COSCO has issued a cautious advisory stating that booking arrangements and actual vessel movements remain subject to change. The company emphasized that the volatile nature of the Middle East situation necessitates constant monitoring and potential operational adjustments.

The shipping giant had originally halted its operations in early March 2026 after increased risks to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This critical waterway, essential for global energy and goods trade, had faced significant disruptions following regional military escalations.

Industry analysts suggest that COSCO’s return to the Gulf routes may indicate a successful diplomatic or tactical arrangement allowing for safer passage of commercial vessels. As a state-owned firm, its move is often viewed as a reflection of China’s broader assessment of regional security levels.

While COSCO has taken this step toward normalization, other international carriers are still evaluating their own risk protocols. The restoration of these trade links is expected to provide much-needed relief to global supply chains and stabilize the flow of essential industrial and consumer goods.
