Tauqeer Nazir, the man accused of running over 15-year-old orphan Waseem Abbas in Multan, has been killed in an alleged shootout with police near Bahawalpur. Punjab’s Crime Control Department (CCD), a police unit that handles serious crime, said the shootout took place early on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
According to CCD District Officer Irfan Akbar, a police team tried to stop two men on a motorcycle near Bahawalpur’s Northern Bypass. Irfan Akbar said the men opened fire and tried to flee. The CCD says Tauqeer Nazir was hit by bullets fired by his own partner, who escaped.
Tauqeer Nazir had escaped from the custody of Multan’s DHA police station a day earlier, police told Geo News. A Bahawalpur police case has been registered over the shootout, Samaa reported.
How Waseem Abbas died
Waseem Abbas lived in an orphanage run by a charity. About a week before his death, he was sent to Tauqeer Nazir to learn electrical work, according to Multan City Police Officer Akhtar Farooq.
Police say Tauqeer Nazir chased the boy, first on foot and then in a car, with another man named Amjad Ali. The car hit Waseem Abbas and threw him against the gate of a house in Multan’s Royal Orchard housing society. He died on the spot, police told ARY News.
CCTV video of the chase spread widely on social media and caused public anger. Tauqeer Nazir had told police his car skidded while he was trying to stop the boy.
Police filed a murder case against both men. A court then handed Tauqeer Nazir to police for four days of questioning, known as physical remand. He was also beaten by lawyers when he was brought to court, Aaj News reported.
Police have not explained the escape
Police have not said when or how Tauqeer Nazir escaped from a police station while on remand. They have also not explained how he travelled from Multan to Bahawalpur, according to Geo News and Minute Mirror.
Amjad Ali, the second man named in the murder case, is still at large. The CCD says its teams are also searching for the man who fled the Bahawalpur shootout.
This is the second suspect killed in an alleged police encounter in two days. On Tuesday, Muhammad Noman, a suspect held over the suicide of university student Laiba Ijaz, was killed in a similar incident in Islamabad, Minute Mirror reported.
