Apple’s New Feature Lets One Number Work On Two iPhones

iPhone Handoff feature

Apple is introducing innovative connectivity technology for iPhone users. The company added a new iPhone Handoff feature to iOS 27 specifically. Therefore, iPhone Handoff feature lets users switch between two iPhones while keeping identical phone numbers active. This capability first appeared briefly during Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote in June. It showed up on a slide listing hundreds of iOS 27 changes. However, Apple didn’t explain functionality details at that time.

How iPhone Handoff Works

Setup happens through Settings, specifically under the Cellular menu. During configuration, Apple lets users designate one iPhone as primary device. Meanwhile, the second device becomes the companion device specifically.

The primary eSIM remains on the main iPhone throughout. However, the companion device receives its own separate companion eSIM. This technical setup allows the same phone number switching between both iPhones seamlessly. Apple manages all cellular settings directly from the main iPhone. Additionally, location sharing follows whichever device is actively being used.

Therefore, users can move between devices without manual eSIM transfers each time. This streamlines the experience considerably for people using multiple iPhones regularly.

Carrier Support Will Be Required

This feature requires both iPhones running iOS 27 specifically. Additionally, cellular carrier support remains absolutely necessary. According to MacRumors forum discussions, T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany could launch support first. However, Apple hasn’t provided a complete supported carrier list yet.

Because carrier support proves essential, immediate availability may vary significantly. Not all iPhone users might access this feature immediately at iOS 27’s launch.

Coming Soon

iPhone Handoff has undergone beta testing alongside broader iOS 27 development. Following approximately three months of testing, Apple expects releasing this update later this month. Additionally, Apple will likely provide more comprehensive information as public release approaches. This includes crucial details about supported carriers and specific device requirements. Finally, iPhone Handoff feature represents a practical solution for users managing multiple devices while maintaining consistent phone number accessibility across their Apple ecosystem.
